Concept Map

Well, here is my concept map for the maritime museum project.

What we’ve got to do is come up with a interactive media project to reveal the invisible life of the museum. I’m thinking I’ll make one for kids because a lot of school do trips there. Kids often think that museums are boring. I suppose that’s because there is often a big collection of artefacts to look at and not much to do. School trips can be boring when you are just looking at things, and have to fill out worksheets. If you have to bring a clipboard and worksheets, it’s not going to be a fun trip.

I always liked museums because I was interested in dinosaurs etc. and how the world looked in the past. Displays where they had moving robotic dinosaurs or prehistoric creatures in their natural habitat were always my favourite because you could imagine what it would be like to be there with them. I also really liked interactive exhibits. Museums are a lot more interesting when you know the story behind the things on display, or you are with someone who does. For example, we went on a trip to the Art Gallery in high school and our art teacher walked around the gallery with us and told us all about the paintings, and who the artists were and what they were like, and what society was like when they were painted. The paintings made a lot more sense and were a lot more interesting than if I was looking at them on their own.

I went to the Maritime Museum once when I was a kid. The only part I really remember is going on the ship, The Diamantina. I thought it was really cool because you can walk around the ship and see the guns, and climb down the little ladders and explore all the rooms. Maybe I could do something about what it was like to live on that ship. First I suppose I’ll have to find out who was on the ship, where it was going and why. I should probably visit the museum again too.

This video explains the basic principals of information design. I like how simple and easy to understand the diagram is.
